Peter de Langen is professor of Cargo Transport & Logistics, at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Science, Technical University Eindhoven, Netherlands. Peter also works at Port of Rotterdam Authority, Department Corporate Strategy as senior advisor. He is involved in various strategic renewal projects.

In 2008 Peter, along with Thanos Pallis and Theo Notteboom, published research on port concessions that won the “Maritime Economics & Logistics Best Paper Award”. Highlights of 2008-9 include invitations by the OECD to lead round-table discussions regarding the shaping of the port sector and the co-editing of the book Ports in proximity: competition and coordination among adjacent seaports (Ashgate, 2009).

The period 1997-2007, Peter worked at Erasmus University Rotterdam where he was engaged in research, education and consultancy in the field of transport, port and regional economics. Overall, Peter has been involved in over 50 research projects.

Peter has extensively published articles on port selection, port policy, and international transport & logistics chains in various scientific journals. Peter has provided guest lectures at various universities in the Netherlands and abroad, including Belgium, France, Greece, Latvia, South Africa, Ethiopia and China.He has been scientific co-ordinator or co-organizer of academic conferences, including the Ports in proximity conference (Antwerp/ Willemstad/ Rotterdam, December 2007).

His main scientific contributions and interests are in the fields of (a) application of cluster theories to (maritime) transport, ports & logistics, with specific attention on governance in clusters; (b) the analysis of coordination in (multimodal) hinterland transport chains; (c) analysis of the effects of concession policies, entry barriers and intra-port competition; and (d) the analysis of strategies of port authorities.

Peter de Langen is founding member and co-director of PortEconomics.eu, a web-based initiative aiming to advance knowledge exchange on port economics, management and policies.
