Dr. Athanasios A. (Thanos) Pallis is Ass. Professor at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport, of the University of the Aegean, Greece and the holder of a Jean Monnet grant on European Port Policy (since 2003). Since 2011 he serves as General Secretary for Ports and Port Policy, at the Ministry of Development Competitiveness and Shipping of the Hellenic Republic.

Thanos holds a Visiting Professor post at the Centre for International Trade and Transportation, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada (since 2007) and lectures at the University of Antwerp, ITMMA (since 2006). He has been Fulbright Maritime Transportation Scholar post at the Centre for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy (CEMTPP), Columbia University, New York, US where he was a Scholar in the academic year 2008-9.

His research and teaching interests include port economics and policy; (maritime) transport policies and governance; and the applications of EU microeconomic and industrial organisation policies in the maritime transport sector.

A regular contributor at the OECD, UNCTAD, and ESPO (European Seaport Organization) discussions regarding the shaping of the port sector, he has participated in research teams advising the European Commission and the government of Canada on port performance and benchmarks. In 2008 he led a research on port concessions that won the "Maritime Economics & Logistics Best Paper Award, 2008". He won the "Best European Study 1999" Competition, organised by the European Community Studies Association (ECSA). In 2007 he celebrated the publication of Maritime Transport: The Greek Paradigm, published by Elsevier in the distinguished Research in Transport Economics series. Previously published books or monographs examine the European Port Policy (published in English, Japanese, and Greek) and the Common EU Maritime Transport Policy (published in English and Greek). His work has been cited in the international literature over 400 times, and acknowledged, by the European Parliament and reviews of the most important studies in the field of port economics and policy.

He has (co)authored 40 journal papers, 9 books, 13 book chapters, and presented over 100 peer reviewed papers in international scientific conferences, and was a keynote speaker/session chairman at professional and scientific conferences. Dr. Pallis has also been involved in several research projects and consultancy studies and examining the structures of the European port industry and other maritime topics.

An elected member of the Council of the International Association of Maritime Economists since 2008 (re-elected 2010) he is also the President of the Hellenic Association of Maritime Economists (ENOE) since October 2010. He is an active member of the Port Performance Research Network (PPRN), the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME), the Special Interest Group Ports & Maritime Transport of the World Transport Research Society, the North Atlantic Transportation Competitiveness Research Council, the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) and the European Level Interests Representation (ELIR) Group. He is also a member of the Association for European Transport, and the Network for Communication and Transport Activities Research.

Actively involved in contract research he has been involved in international projects, financed among others by the European Commission, the Greek ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, and Mercantile Marine, the Greek Competition Authority, the Ports of Piraeus, and Igoumenitsa, the Hellenic Association of Short-sea Shipping, the Canadian Department of Transport, and several shipping and maritime related companies. He is a founding member and co-director of PortEconomics.

Thanos received his BSc (Economics) from Athens University of Economics, Greece (1992), his MA (Economics of European Integration) from Exeter University, UK (1993), and his Ph.D. from the School of Management, University of Bath, UK in 1998.
