ESPO 2012 Award Focuses on Future Generations

The ESPO (European Sea Port Organisation) Award on Societal Integration of Ports is entering its fourth edition this year. The Award was established in 2009 to promote innovative projects of port authorities that improve societal integration of ports, especially with the city or wider community in which they are located. In this way, the Award wants to stimulate the sustainable development of European ports and their cities. For the 2012 competition, the theme 'Youth' was chosen. Societal integration of ports also means making future generations of employees, neighbours and other stakeholders aware of what the port sector has to offer. Awareness has to start at an early age and this is why the 2012 edition of the ESPO Award wants to promote projects of ports reaching out to young people, whether these are school children, students or young professionals. A variety of possibilities exists, including educational partnerships at various levels (from kindergarten to university), hands-on experience events, job campaigns and the use of games and multimedia. As with previous editions, potential winners are those port authorities that excel in long-term creative thinking, foster sustainable partnerships with stakeholders and demonstrate tangible results. The fourth ESPO Award will be officially handed out during an evening ceremony which will be held on 7 November in Brussels.

The Port Center Network website by AIVP

The Port Center Network, developed by AIVP, the Worldwide Network of Port Citiesis has now its own website online: http://www.portcenternetwork.org. The Port Center Network concept (as extracted by the AIVP site) Cities and ports express a growing need to communicate about their specificities. We can observe the rise of a large number of initiatives to educate local communities about the importance and the added value of port activities. Existing educational centers of the modern port activity totally match this strategy. They do inform a wide public about port development stakes for the community, help to increase local support and get younger people be interested in port orientated careers. Pursuing this objective of awareness and enhancement of port activities, PORT CENTERS provide the public, initiated or not, with the possibility to discover, experience and understand better contemporary port activities. A space open to the widest public, it can cover subjects such as industrial port activities, the goods transported, international trade, the port professions or again the integration of the port with its city and many others. Two elements are essential and common to the various PORT CENTERS: an exhibition and educative activities. By presenting the diversity of the activities, their economic spin-offs for the territory and the potentialities in terms of employment for younger people, PORT CENTERS have the vocation of explaining, educating and bringing together the port community and the citizens. The PORT CENTER is not only a "visitors" center with an exhibition. One of the main objectives of a PORT CENTER consist in organizing port excursions/visits, port lectures and other port educational projects with a broad network in the port community (private and public stakeholders), schools and universities. The project is supported by the European Sea Port Organisation (ESPO)

UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport 2011

The Review of Maritime Transport, an annual publication prepared by the Division on Technology and Logistics of the UNCTAD secretariat, is an important source of information on the port sector. It closely monitors developments affecting world seaborne trade, freight rates, ports, surface transport and logistics services, as well as trends in ship ownership and control and fleet age, tonnage supply and productivity. The Review contains a chapter on legal and regulatory developments and each year includes a special chapter analysing a selected topic in depth. In the special chapter on ports records that world container port throughput increased by an estimated 13.3 per cent to 531 million 20-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in 2010, after stumbling briefly in 2009. The UNCTAD Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI) reveals that China maintains its lead as the single most connected country. It is followed by Hong Kong (China), Singapore and Germany. In 2011, 91 countries increased their LSCI ranking over 2010, 6 saw no change, and 65 recorded a decrease. In 2011 Review, the focus is on the participation of developing countries in different maritime businesses. As highlighted, developing countries are not only users of shipping services but increasingly participants in the provision of these services, through the operation of seaports, and other relevant activities.Key developments reported in this year´s Review also include the fact that after contracting in 2009, international shipping experienced an upswing in demand in 2010, and recorded a positive turnaround in volumes, especially in the dry bulk and container trade segments. Total seaborne trade reached an estimated 8.4 billion tons in 2010.You can download the 2011 Review of Maritime Transport via the UNCTAD website @ Review of Maritime Trasnport
