Diagnosing the Marine Transportation System: Measuring Performance & Targeting Improvement
TRB's Marine Board is cosponsoring the conference on Diagnosing the Marine Transportation System: Measuring Performance and Targeting Improvement on June 26-28, 2012, in Washington, D.C.The conference will serve as a forum to examine the use of performance metrics in maritime transportation and waterways management. Through collaborative input from stakeholders in government, academia, and the private sector, conference participants will explore how the marine transportation system and intermodal connectors perform through the application of performance metrics.Abstracts from individuals or groups wishing to present at the conference are due by March 31, 2012. IAME 2012: The PortEconomics Diary
The annual conference of the International Association of Maritime Εconomists-IAME 2012, that was held in Taipei, Taiwan provided to the PortEconomics team the opportunity to present the research they conducted over the last year. In total PortEconomics members presented 16 different port or port relate studies that progressed over the course of the last months, shaping research developments in the emerging research field of port economics, policy and management, as well as in port related studies. PortEconomics plans to extensively report on each of theme the next days. Stay tuned !! Societal Integration of ports: Stockholm wins the ESPO Award
On 9 November the Ports of Stockholm were granted the 2011 European Sea Port Organisation (ESPO) Award for Societal Integration for their "Port vision 2015" plan. The theme of this year's competition was 'Creative Strategies to Communicate the Port to the Wider Public'. The PortEconomics team has been indirectly involved in the competition, as its member Dr. George Vaggelas has been actively contributed to the bid of the Port of Thessaloniki that was the second port competing in the final. The port of Koper was the third port that made it to the final.Read more about this year's award via the ESPO website, where you can also find what European ports do to integrate with the society.

IAME 2011 @ Santiago Chile
The opening of IAME 2011 Conference, the annual meeting of maritime economists around the globe, will take place in Santiago Chile on October 25th, and a most interestening conference programme is to follow.With over 100 full papers accepted and contributors from five continents, this year's IAME 2011 Conference is going to be one of the outstanding events in Latin America this year. The organising team together with UN-ECLAC as host of the event are looking forward to welcoming the IAME community and supporters to this year's event.The current economic situation will be a key topic at this year's conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME). Environmental issues and institutional perspectives have developed as prime topics. What are the new developments in port devolution? What are emerging business strategies in the maritime and logistics industry. European Port Policy: A new port package in 2013 Featured
In a video interview to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwsblad Transport, European Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas responsible for Transport announced his intention to bring forward in 2013 a package of proposals to help ports remain competitive and support the huge potential for growth in the port sector. An amazing initiative: Children experiencing a working container terminal
AIVP was there and brought us forward the news of an amazing port initiative: Since 2006 children are having the opportunity of experiencing a working port container terminal...an amazing private initiative by Contship in La Spezia. More @ http://www.diariocontship.it/AIVP is the worldwide network of port cities, was founded in France in the port-city of Le Havre in 1988. The Association includes today nearly 200 ports, cities, business firms or public organisations, and an international network that covers 37 countries.

News about PortEconomics sponsored ECONSHIP 2011 travel to South Africa
The PortEconomics sponsored European Conference on Shipping, Intermodalism and Ports - ECONSHIP 2011 gets extra publicity in South Africa, with Dr. Mike Chassomeris reporting at the latest newsletter of the University of Kwazulu-Natal. Mike Chasomeris presented at ECONSHIP 2011 his research on: "Port Pricing in South Africa". The paper reviewed the literature and examined industry perspectives that contribute towards a better understanding of the historical evolution of port pricing in South Africa as well as examined contemporary pricing reforms. The paper and presentation were well received.When asked what the most beneficial aspects of the conference were, Dr Chasomeris said: 'The opportunity to meet academics from other countries, who are also interested in maritime studies, is always of great benefit to me. I enjoy the opportunity to reacquaint with old friends and to meet new people and to network. The papers presented were very interesting and useful to me and my students. I was pleased that some papers are directly relevant to the research topics of several of the MBA students that I am supervising and I look forward to sharing this knowledge with them.' The positive feedback for the event that was held in Chios, the fifth largest of the Greek Islands and the place known for its maritime culture that has produced several generations of successful ship owners and operators, sets higher standards for the fortchoming events to be organised by the PortEconomics team. Τhe PortEconomics sponsored event European Conference on Shipping, Intermodalism and Ports - ECONSHIP 2011, took place in Chios, Greece between the 22nd and 24th of June with a resounding success.The conference attracted 192 leading international academics and practitioners from 34 countries discussed the prospects of shipping, shipping finance, human resources management, maritime technology, the environmental challenges, safety and security, intermodalism, and ports, maritime education, logistics, and risk are the key areas to be discussed by both.Eleven of the academic sessions were devoted to issues of ports, with governance, performance, trends in the sector, logistics, integration to supply chains, port policies, and latest developments in ports of the world being the key themes covered.The 3-day program also included major industry sessions where keynote speakers address issues of major importance for the contemporary shipping world.Among the highlights was the Jean Monnet Round-Table on European Port Policy that was moderated by PortEconomics members Thanos Pallis, scientific coordinator of Jean Monnet Action European Port Policy and Chairman of the Hellenic Association of Maritime Economists (ENOE).
