The 13th meeting of the Port Performance Research Network (PPRN) takes place on Sunday, 23rd August, in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, with PortEconomics members meeting together with fellow maritime economists interested in port research at the eve of the 2015 Annual Conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME).
PPRN is an informal network of maritime economists interested in issues of port policy. It was established at the IAME 2001 meeting in Hong Kong to undertake empirical testing of port governance, and is currently coordinated by PortEconomics members Drs. Mary R. Brooks and Thanos A. Pallis. Since then, PPRN has met 12 times, always at the eve of IAME conferences.
The outcome of the first phases of PPRN activities was published in: Brooks M.R. and Cullinane K. (Eds), 2007 Devolution, Port Governance and Port Performance. London: Elsevier. Research.
The second phase produced a number of special journal issues on sub-themes of interest to the group. Findings from the second phase were published in the following special issues:
- Port strategy and performance; Research in Transportation Business and Management (2013), special issued edited by M.R. Brooks and A.A. Palllis;
- Cruise and cruise ports; Research in Transportation Business and Management (2014), special issue edited by A.A. Pallis, J-P. Rodrigue, T.E. Notteboom;
- Port concessions; Maritime Policy and Management (2012), special issue edited by T.E. Notteboom, A.A. Pallis and S. Farell;
- Institutional issues of port governance – Special issue of Journal of Transport Geography (2011) edtited by Adolf Ng, P. V. Hall and A.A. Pallis.
The 2015 PPRN meeting will further discuss frameworks and structure future research lines for Phase 3. PPRN members will report on current research strands and future plans. Attendees will have a roundtable discussion of what progress has been made, or on methods of analysis or methodologies would be appropriate for the future work of the team. Network Members will then explore next steps in the research agenda of the Network and topics of interest to the group.
