“The future is smart: the digitisation of container trade and supply chains” was the title of the session moderated by PortEconomics member Thomas Vitsounis during the highly profiled TOC Europe conference held in Hamburg 14-16 June 2016. The discussion focused on new technologies and how they already alter the ports and maritime industry with reference to innovative examples already applied in several ports around the globe.
Thomas also acted as a speaker in a session about “The internet of things and big data: Connectivity, visibility and analytics”. During his presentation emphasised that data is the new form of competition in the near future and the need of every company to develop and apply a data analytics strategy right away. ‘Big data’ is not about storing large amounts of data but mostly about solving real problems in unique ways and highlighted the importance of new tools and technologies such as Machine learning, the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence etc. that open up unprecedented opportunities for innovation.
Thomas focused on specific areas in which data analytics can deliver a competitive edge such as forecasting, anticipating customer needs, dynamic scheduling, market analysis and customer-centric analytics.
