PortEconomics co-director Theo Notteboom published a study commissioned by the Province of Antwerp on the employment and value added impact of the port of Antwerp on the municipalities in the Province of Antwerp and part of the Province of East Flanders in Belgium. The aim of the study was to analyse how much employment and value added in these municipalities is linked to the port. Also, the study presented figures on the municipal taxes linked to the employment effects of the port. The results show that in some villages and small cities close to the port such as Beveren, Stabroek and Kapellen more than 25% of the active population works in the port. There are large differences among the municipalities in terms of the share of specific industries in port-related employment: some villages have a high share of dock workers and transport/logistics workers, while in other villages the chemical and other port-related industry is the main generator of jobs. The study further reveals that the employment effects of the port extend to villages up to 75 km away from the port. This underlines that a main port such as Antwerp has far-reaching effects on the hinterland.
