November 2010: PortEconomics member Thanos Pallis was among the speakers at the  CEMTPP Marine Transportation Lecture Series having the theme Port Financing in the Post-Financial Crisis: Funding the infrastructures that support globalization, that was held at Columbia University, New York, on November 12, 2010 .

The event was organized by the Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy, Columbia University, NY, in cooperation with NYMAR and The Transportation Committee of the New York State Bar Association, International Section.

This insightful roundtable discussion on the direction of port financing following the recent financial crisis consisted of port specialists in academia, practitioners, and notably the recently appointed Head of maritime affairs in the United States, Administrator Matsuda. Topics covered included infrastructure development, globalization, sustainability, and security- all areas that extend into sectors beyond the conventional maritime industry.

Thanos Pallis presentation The Changing Landscape of Port Finance: Lessons from the 2000s & Scenarios for 2030 was based on a study, co-authored by the PortEconomics associate member Jean-Paul Rodrigue and the PortEconomics member Theo Notteboom, entitled “The  Financialisation of the Port & Terminal Industry, in Shipping and Ports: Revisiting embededdnessand risk assessment”.
