The annual conference of the International Association of Maritime Εconomists-IAME 2012, that was held in Taipei, Taiwan provided to the PortEconomics team the opportunity to present the research they conducted over the last year. In total PortEconomics members presented 16 different port or port relate studies that progressed over the course of the last months, shaping research developments in the emerging research field of port economics, policy and management, as well as in port related studies.

PortEconomics plans to extensively report on each of theme the next days. Stay tuned !!

8 Sept-13h00:  IAME 2012, The final act: Closing Ceremony: Two members of the PortEconomics team, Pierre Cariou and Francesco Parola, responsible for the organisation of IAME 2013 in Marseilles, France, present the forthcoming IAME Conference.

8 Sept-12h30:  More good news for port studies and PortEconomics: Runner up paper for the Hanjin Prize is the study MODELLING PORT CHOICE IN AN UNCERTAIN ENVIRONMENT conducted by PortEconomics associate member Adolf Ng (along with Gi-Tae Yeo, Paul Tae-Woo Lee, Zaili Yang). Congratulations Adolf!!

7 Sept-17h00: IAME Council decides the location of IAME 2014: Norfolk, Virginia USA; PortEconomics associate member Mary Brooks to lead the International Scientific Committre.

7 Sept-14h00: Six parallel sessions begin, six port or port related studies are presented by the PortEconomics team. During the third round of the day, PortEconomics members are back  by discussing the following studies (all will soon be available to the readers of PortEconomics):

7 Sept-10h30: Another round of sessions, the first one without participation by any member of the PortEconomics team. Yet many PortEconomics members keep themselves busy participating at the first meeting of the newly elected IAME Council to decide, among other where IAME 2014 is going to take place; as known IAME 2013 will be organised by the members of the PortEconomics team Pierre Cariou and Francesco Parola in Marseille (July 2013).


7 Sept-09h30: Results of the IAME Council results are now officially confirmed – PortEconomics co-director Thanos Pallis, and team members and associates Pierre Carriou, Mary Brooks, Adolf Ng, Gordon Wilmsmeier will serve the new IAME Council for the next two years; Francesco Parolla will join them for the first year as representative of the organising team of IAME 2013 in Marseilles – Adding the re-elected President Theo Notteboom, 7 members of the PortEconomics team will be involved in the shaping of the global association of maritime economists and researchers over the next two years.

7 Sept-08h20: Early morning start of the second day of IAME 2012 begins with the PortEconomics team presenting two port related studies (that will soon be available to the visitors of PortEconomics):
– Adolf Ng and Cesar Ducruet: PORT GEOGRAPHY PAPERS BIBLIOMETRICS (1950-2011): COMMUNITY STRUCTURE, BACKGROUND AND DIFFUSION
– Francesco Parola (along with Claudio Ferrari and Alessio Tei: FACING THE ECONOMIC THE IMPACT OF SLOW-STEAMING ON CONTAINER SHIPPING NETWORKS.

6 Sept-18h30: First day of IAME 2012 ends with the PortEconomics team presenting three more port studies (that will soon be available to the visitors of PortEconomics):

6 Sept-16.00: 149 papers will presented by maritime economists to maritime economists over the next days – many of these are studies on ports.

6 Sept 08h45: The Annual Conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) started on September 6th, at Taipei, Taiwan. 

During this unique global conference for academics, key industry practitioners, and policy makers from diverse backgrounds and interests to meet, discuss and debate critical and challenging issues that will affect the future direction of international shipping, port and logistics research and practice.

The theme of IAME 2012 is “Clustering Logistics with Ports and Shipping Services in the time of Free Trade“. International shipping, port and logistics research have been envisaged an unprecedented number of issues, opportunities and challenges in the globalised world, many of which have global impacts and implications.


5 Sept 18h00:  The programme of IAME 2012 is available on-line via the official Conference wepbage @ IAME 2012; A warm welcome by the organisers of IAME 2012 on-board: PortEconomics members join fellow maritime researchers at a river cruise – all looking forward for a most productive week.

Thanos Pallis

Dr. Thanos Pallis is Professor of Port Economics & Policy & the scientific coordinator of the Jean Monnet Action on European Port Policy at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport (STT), University of the Aegean, Greece. He is currently the President of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME), and has served as secretary general of MedCruise, the association of cruise ports in the Med. The author of the acclaimed book "European Port Policy", he has an extensive international experience in port policy and economics. Thanos co-directs PortEconomics and is a regular contributor at the work of national governments and international organisation (UNCTAD, OECD, and ESPO, IAPH, and AVIP) shaping the port sector.
