A 5,62% increase of passenger movements comparing to 2014 was registered in Mediterranean cruise ports in 2015.

The variation of cruise passenger movements in the second biggest cruise region of the world is positive when one relates the numbers with the one that had taken place at the beginning of the decade. In 2015 cruise ports in the Med and its adjoining seas hosted 10,7% more passenger movements than in 2010.

MedCruise the association cruise ports in the Med and its adjoining seas revealed that a total of 27.206.023 cruise passenger movements were registered in its member cruise ports in 2015.

The scale of cruise passengers has exceeded 25 million movements every single year since 2011. While, the volatility of the total passenger movements on a year per year basis sustains, it seems that the decline of 2014 might be attributed to the comparatively slow growth of cruise activities around the globe of the particular year.

The Table below presents an overview of cruise traffic recorded at each MedCruise member port in 2015 comparing with 2014. In 38 port members, the growing numbers are higher than the average growth of the MedCruise region. 14 other member ports have retained the levels of cruise members that they had observed the year before, whereas 20 other members faced in 2015 challenges in retaining the numbers of cruise passenger movements that had been hosted in 2014.

Despite the emphasis that cruise lines put on the growth of other regions of the world, i.e. the Asian market, the Med and its adjoining seas is a region that continues to generate increased interest of cruise passengers. The challenge for Med ports, destinations and all other stakeholders is to provide all those conditions that will transform this growth to a sustainable one and allow further growth.

Dr. Thanos Pallis is Professor of Port Economics & Policy & the scientific coordinator of the Jean Monnet Action on European Port Policy at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport (STT), University of the Aegean, Greece. He is currently the President of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME), and has served as secretary general of MedCruise, the association of cruise ports in the Med. The author of the acclaimed book "European Port Policy", he has an extensive international experience in port policy and economics. Thanos co-directs PortEconomics and is a regular contributor at the work of national governments and international organisation (UNCTAD, OECD, and ESPO, IAPH, and AVIP) shaping the port sector.
