How the strategic planning of a liner alliance affects the development prospects of a container port? How the relations inside the alliance are reflected on port selection? Shipping strategies and the rise of global liner alliances is the subject of PortEconomics member George Vaggelas’ most recent port study.
George has identified the linkages between an alliance and the ownership structure of a container port and the port’s importance for the global trade, in order to better understand the evolvement of alliances strategies.
His case study is the recently (2008) privatised Piraeus port, with his have been collected daily via AIS (marinetraffic.com), from April to June 2018. A total observations of 609, 538 container ship calls to Pier I (PPA SA)and Piers II & III (PCT SA) of Piraeus port provide some most useful insights in answering some vital questions on shipping lines strategies in major container ports acting as transhipment hubs.

His study- which is a work in progress- has been presented during the Jean Monnet Symposium on the Future of European Port Policy, held 28-29 June in Chios, Greece
