PortEconomics associate member Adolf Ng, together with Sergi Sauri and Mateu Turro, recently published their study on “Short Sea Shipping in Europe: Issues, Policies and Challenges” in a book, entitled: Regulating Transport in Europe (edited by Matthias Finger and Torben Holvad, Edward Elgar).
In this study, the authors discuss the major issues affecting short sea shipping (SSS) development in Europe focusing on the European Union’s (EU) regulations and initiatives. Apart from an overview of SSS in Europe, it also analyses the most current EU SSS policies, which include: (1) the history of the interest of the EU in SSS; (2) the regulations and programmes; (3) the results. Towards the end, the authors also address two topics closely related with SSS, namely the role of ports and environmental issues.
